Infra red saunas and the history of far infrared technology
For years, the average consumer's familiarity with far infrared came from the use of far infrared heat lamps which produce radiant heat. Then, in the mid 1960's NASA discovered that a number of mineral oxides were also capable of generating far infrared waves. After using various far infrared products in the space program, no further developments occurred at NASA using this technology. However, according to Sang Wang, author of Reverse Aging, the Japanese saw other uses.
Today, over 150 patents have been granted to the Japanese for products such as: far infrared saunas, far infrared ovens that replace microwaves, far infrared panels for incubators in maternity wards as well as far infrared wave-generating ceramics and fabrics. According to Dr. Tsu-Tsair Oliver Chi, in his summation on the mechanism of action of far infrared devices tuned to the human body, "...these rays are selectively absorbed by tissues needing a boost in their output. The internal production of far infrared energy is associated with a variety of healing responses and may require a boost to a maximal level to insure the fullest healing response possible in a tissue which is being repaired. After boosting a tissue's level to its maximum, the remaining rays pass onward harmlessly. This phenomenon is called 'resonant-absorption.'"
Over the past 25 years, Japanese and Chinese researchers and clinicians have conducted extensive research on far infrared treatments and report numerous benefits. In Japan, there is an Infrared Society, composed of medical doctors and physical therapists, to further research and support the health benefits as a method of healing.

Dr. Toshiko Yamazaki, MD owns a clinic in Japan where she has done extensive research on the therapeutic uses of far infrared. In her book, "The Science of far infrared Therapies," she explains that one of the reasons far infrared has beneficial results in a variety of illnesses is the ability of far infrared waves to detoxify, which are often at the core of many health problems. Since humans are bio-accumulators, numerous toxins, that cannot be removed immediately after entry, are stored in our bodies.
