In honor of women’s health this month, we want to share some important information on heart disease, which is now widely recognized in the medical field as the number one killer of both men and women in the United States each year. Frightening enough, it’s also known as the “secret killer” among women: just as many women as men in the U.S. now die from heart disease.
According to webmd.com, heart disease – if left untreated – can result in stroke or heart attack. What’s more, symptoms for heart attacks vary between men and women. When most of us think of a heart attack, we think of the familiar heart attack symptoms: A crushing pain in the center of the chest, shortness of breath, and sweating. But there are several other symptoms that may also indicate heart attack…especially in women. These symptoms include pain high in the abdomen, jaw, back or neck, or simply a shortness of breath or fatigue. Some people have no pain or symptoms, known as silent ischemia.1
The good news: while risk factors vary from person to person based on genetic history, there are many external factors that women can control. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, eating right, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, not smoking and limiting alcohol intake are all things we can do to keep a healthy heart. Stress reduction is another major factor in heart health.
