Doctors and health experts like Dr. Amy Myers and Dave Asprey frequently extol the benefits of infrared saunas for everything from skin purification to improved circulation. Whether you’re looking for a sauna to improve your general health and wellness, or to treat or prevent a chronic condition, it’s important to choose the right sauna for you—one that’s effective, safe, and proven.
Buying a sauna is a big investment and researching the many technical specifications to ensure that you’re purchasing the right one can take time. It may be tempting to jump on a good deal or snap up the first one you see in stock, but not all saunas are created equal. Whether you’re looking for a sauna for your home health and wellness or for commercial reasons, to know what you’re getting and make sure that it’s the right sauna for your needs, ask your sales rep these three questions before you buy:
1. Does the sauna heat the body effectively?
By raising your core temperature from the inside-out, infrared heat induces a deep sweat that flushes toxins from your body. Used regularly, infrared saunas can produce a host of health benefits. But to reap the benefits of infrared, you’ll need a sauna with a medical-grade heater.
A quick look at the variety of heaters currently on the market shows that generic carbon-fiber or generic carbon heaters, ceramic heaters, and carbon-ceramic heaters are readily available and affordable. These heaters can heat the outside of your body, making you feel as though you’re receiving the benefits of that heat, but they don’t effectively deliver the inside-out, therapeutic heat you need for detoxification, pain relief, improved circulation, reduced blood pressure, and overall cell health.
To get these health benefits, your sauna must deliver the right concentration of infrared heat. Scientists measure a heater’s ability to absorb and release infrared heat in terms of “emissivity.” So, before you choose a sauna, ask your sales rep for 3rd party emissivity data. Sunlighten Solocarbon® heaters are the only patented emissive heaters on the market today—and they’re clinically proven 95 to 99 percent effective.
2. Is it safe for your body — and your home or business?
The positive health benefits of sauna use can be compromised by shoddy workmanship or cheap materials that are unfortunately present in some products. So, ask about the materials your sauna is made from, inside and out. Carbon heater panels should be heat-sealed to ensure that no wires or glues can give off harmful gas. If your skin is sensitive or strong odors bother you, look for a sauna made of basswood, the only wood that is considered hypo-allergenic.
If you’re looking for a sauna for home use, you’ll also want to know if it’s safe to operate the sauna in your home or business. If you’re buying a sauna for a commercial facility, be sure it is tested for all-day continual use. We often take electrical safety for granted, but not all saunas are certified to meet electrical and safety standards. Before you buy, look for a stamp indicating that your sauna has been certified safe by ETL or another safety agency. Sunlighten saunas have been tested and approved by five safety agencies.
3. Are the manufacturer’s claims backed by objective, third-party testing?
Finally, ask your sales rep to back up any claims about a sauna’s effectiveness, safety, or quality. The manufacturer should be able to provide:
- Data on the quality and quantity of infrared.
- Independent verification of EMF levels.
- Eco- and hypo-allergenic certifications.
- Safety marks or certifications.
- Testimonials from doctors, health experts, and consumers.
Sunlighten saunas have undergone extensive third-party testing, and we are always excited to share that data with our customers. Our saunas are recommended by more health experts than any other sauna brand. You can get all the facts here.
4. What additional features does it offer?
There are a few other factors you should consider before making a sauna purchase. For instance, is it easy to assemble? Some saunas require unsightly clips to hold the walls together, but ours offer an exclusive patented magnetic locking system, Magne-Seal™, which allows for superior ease of assembly as well as increased heat protection, durability, and security.
Is it easy to use? Because our saunas feature the full spectrum of near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths, they are effective at addressing a wide variety of wellness goals. With our six preset wellness programs, we make it easy for you to select the benefits you need from each session. You can easily program your session for cardio, detoxification, pain relief, relaxation, weight loss, or skin health.
What more could I ask for? We’re glad you asked! Sunlighten’s sauna offerings include several additional special features that can be added to optimize your sauna experience. One of our favorites is Acoustic Resonance Therapy from So Sound™, which provides a healing environment unlike any other by introducing the harmonic vibrations of music. The many benefits of acoustic resonance therapy include reducing stress and tension, balancing heart rate and blood pressure, energizing and uplifting mood, and aiding in pain management.
Whether you’ve been instructed by a doctor to use an infrared sauna for your health, are looking to take a pro-active approach to wellness, or want to expand your spa offerings, you should be armed with the information you need to make the best choice. Ask the questions above to ensure that your sauna purchase is effective, safe, and proven to provide the results you’re looking for.
