Today marks a special date- January 17- it’s the day when most people officially fall off the wagon!  Which wagon, you might ask?  The New Year’s Resolutions wagon!  It’s officially “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day” and it’s the most common date that folks just give up.

What about you? Making (and keeping) resolutions can be a healthy and motivating way to jump-start life-long changes.  But how do you keep them?  (Especially beyond January 17?)

  • Work on one specific, actionable thing at a time.  Pie-in-the-sky, overly general resolutions seldom work.  (Think: I’m going to save more money, be healthier and eat better.  This just has failure written all over it!)
  • The key is actionable behavior.  For the above goals, the better way of thinking might be this:  I’m going to put away $30 every week into a savings account and at the end of year, place it into a Roth IRA.  Or, I’m going to cook 4 meals per week, where raw, whole foods comprise at least 50% of my plate.
  • Check in with yourself every day!  Monitor your progress and celebrate your milestones.
