Have a Heart Healthy February!

It’s February, and with it comes love, romance and all things related to matters of the heart… and speaking of heart, February is also American Heart Month.  So while passion and amour fill the air, it is also important to recognize the human heart as an organ vital to our health and quality of living. Bringing awareness to heart-healthy living is very important to us at Sunlighten, and with our longstanding partnership with the American Heart Association, we are paying it forward for healthy hearts.

Every February, we donate a portion of our proceeds to the AHA and participate in their events around the Kansas City area.  This Friday 2/3, the Sunlighten team will wear red on National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for Go Red for Women.







One of our favorite past Wear Red Days was when the Sunlighten Team got together in the spirit of fun and do the Harlem Shake to celebrate American Heart Month and Go Red.  We know how to amuse ourselves!

All playfulness aside, heart disease is not a laughing matter.  According to the American Heart Association, in 2013 over 600,000 deaths in the United States were due to diseases of the heart.  This included heart disease and other cardiovascular illnesses.  Heart complications have been plaguing our nation for many years, and whether the reason is due to genetics, poor diet or lifestyle, or from a myriad of other factors, it is important to start doing what you can today to take care of your heart.

Live a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle

  1. Exercise more. It seems obvious but it is surprising how many people don’t get enough physical activity during the day.  The 2008 Federal PA Guidelines recommends engaging in moderate leisure-time physical activity for at least 150 minutes per week or vigorous activity at last 75 minutes per week or an equivalent combination for adults, and sadly, approximately half of the U.S. population doesn’t get enough physical activity.
  2. Eat healthy. Sure, it’s OK to indulge in an ice cream cone, or to order pizza every once in a while, but making this an everyday thing can be detrimental to your health!  Make eating healthy the norm and your heart will thank you for it along with other organs in your body!
  3. USE A SUNLIGHTEN SAUNA REGULARLY!! Our saunas provide numerous health benefits, including  lower blood pressure, increased blood flow and circulation, and weight loss to name a few.  But the reason why the AHA chose to partner with us is because only Sunlighten saunas were clinically shown to stabilize blood pressure with regular use.
  4. Last but not least, remember there are no excuses! It is easy to say we don’t have enough time to exercise, or take a home-made salad to work.  But only YOU can empower yourself to take control of your wellness.  You only have one body and you must take care of it now to prevent issues later.  As my good friend Dr. Michelle Robin says, “you can pay as you go, or your body will send you a bill later”.

For over a decade we have partnered with the American Heart Association out of our passion for healthy living and in our mission to empower others to improve their quality of life.  With a few small tweaks in one’s lifestyle, you can build a happy, healthy heart.
