World Class Athletes Use Infrared Sauna Therapy

We’ve been watching the London Olympics obsessively around here. And we are constantly amazed at the athletic abilities of the Olympic athletes. The entire spectacle has us thinking about our friend and Sunlighten endorser, Dr. Jeffrey Spencerdr jeffrey spencer .

A former Olympian himself (1972 U.S. cycling team), Dr. Spencer has worked with world class athletes like Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong and NASCAR driver Bobby LaBonte. He was a Tour de France team doctor eight times. Dr. Spencer practices functional medicine in the professional athletic world. He helps high-level athletes create personalized success programs which incorporate strategic goal planning, physical training, nutrition, proactive wellness care, injury management and winning mindset.

In his memoir Every Second Counts, Lance Armstrong said, of Dr. Spencer and his holistic approach to athletic wellness and success:

Jeff is part doctor, part guru, part medicine man…we believed Jeff could fix any and all of our problems…While he fixed us physically, he also fixed us mentally…If you judged the most important man on the Postal team by the foot traffic in and out his door, then it was Jeff. Without him, we knew we’d never make it to Paris [the final stage of the Tour de France].

Part of what Dr. Spencer does with his athlete patients is to minimize injury downtime and expedite recovery after competition. To promote muscle recovery, reduce tension and eliminate performance inhibiting toxic burdens from an athlete’s body, Spencer recommends regular use of a Sunlighten far infrared sauna.

Infrared heat can greatly benefit the sore, damaged or tired muscles of an athlete. The heat penetrates the muscles, increasing blood circulation and assisting muscle repair. Infrared heat will also help in the reduction of lactic acids, allowing tight and worn-out muscles to relax. The penetrating heat of the infrared sauna can also help ease the pain of a muscle sprain (after administration of cold and compression).

Just as infrared saunas help chronic pain sufferers (such as those with Lyme disease and fibromyalgia), they can also help ease joint pain in athletes. The relaxation of the muscles controlling the joints and the increased circulation to the joints enhances healing and repair.

WEB lance and jeff spencer 300x245 Dr. Spencer notes that “‘[s]ame ol’ same ol’ doesn’t work for me; it’s way too slow to achieve and maintain optimal health, which isn’t good enough for my clients, who demand that I employ the most innovative and effective (though often unorthodox) methodologies to get them to the top and keep them there. It’s a great experience to work with the best and find the innovations that put and keep them on top.”

And how does Dr. Spencer, physician and athlete himself, stay healthy and energized with his hectic schedule?

“I make deliberate time to exercise daily, beginning with 45 minutes of qigong before the sun comes up, followed by at least an hour of cycling during the day. I also do full-body resistive training daily, take supplements specific to my needs, get regular adjustments, do Thai/Chinese massage, eat a calorie-restrictive organic diet, infrared sauna, sleep and work using the earthing technology, live and work in green, nontoxic environments, spend time mentoring others and being with people I care about, and speak to groups and do seminars to share with others my experiences. . . I also get regular proactive health assessments from the best professionals I can find.”

Dr. Spencer received his Master’s Degree in Sports Science at the University of Southern California. He was recognized with the ‘Outstanding Clinician Award’ when he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles. After receiving his post-graduate Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician degree from Los Angeles Chiropractic College, he became a postgraduate faculty member teaching sports injury rehabilitation. In 2004, Dr. Spencer was the International Chiropractic Association’s ‘Sports Chiropractor of the Year’ Award.

And we are proud to call him our friend and partner in health and wellness!
