Feeling Good
with Dr. Mark Hyman

Sunlighten was at the Feel Good Summit with Dr. Mark Hyman

At Sunlighten, we are huge fans of the functional medicine pioneer, Dr. Mark Hyman.  Our relationship with Dr. Hyman began more than a decade ago when he utilized Sunlighten saunas in his own practice and wellness plan and recommended our technology in his New York Times bestseller, Ultra-Metabolism.

We are inspired by Dr. Hyman’s efforts to empower others to reach their full potential for vitality. When we were asked to be a part of his first ever Feel Good Summit, we couldn’t say “yes” fast enough!

The Feel Good Summit took place in Southern California at the oceanfront Terranea Resort from June 7 – 10, 2018.

Hosted by Dr. Hyman and friends, the three-day summit was developed to help 500+ attendees create their own personalized wellness plans while enhancing a sense of support and community.

The schedule included keynotes and masterclasses from top wellness experts, movement and meditation workshops and some rest and relaxation with a Sunlighten sauna experience.

Sunlighten offered mPulse 3-in-1 sauna sessions and Solo System portable far infrared sessions so attendees could relax and learn more about Sunlighten infrared therapy and experience the rejuvenating benefits firsthand.

Other Helpful Articles from Dr. Mark Hyman

Dr Hyman: Hey everybody, it’s Dr Mark Hyman here at the first ever Feel Good summit in Southern California, and one of our partners is Sunlighten, which I actually have been using for a long long time. It’s a cool sauna because they have this one that I used when I was really sick and I had to detox from mercury. It’s called the Sunlighten Solo Sauna. It’s this really cool thing; it’s like a little tube that you go in and lay on the floor and you can listen to music, and it’s pretty awesome. But they have a whole array of saunas and I invited Alicia here to talk about what their saunas are, because they’re so different from a typical infrared sauna and highly therapeutic. So how did you guys come up with this concept of this infrared sauna, and why is infrared so important as opposed to regular sauna or steam, and does it really matter? Or do you just need to sweat? What’s the big deal?

Alicia: Yes, it is a huge deal and there’s a huge difference. Sunlighten started about 20 years ago with our owners, Connie and Aaron Zack. Connie’s brother was actually going through heavy metal toxicity and chronic fatigue from a mercury poisoning.

Dr Hyman: Just like me.

Alicia: Yes, but 20 years ago we didn’t have the advancements of infrared that we have today. So he went through a bunch of medical treatments and nothing was working. He was in his mid-20’s and just couldn’t get out of bed. He was really feeling terrible. His skin was turning yellow, and finally his dentist suggested trying infrared light. So he added far infrared therapy to his treatment and it really started to help him detox. So the family decided to develop a real medical grade infrared, and that’s how Sunlighten was born.

Dr Hyman: So how is that different than just sweating like in a sauna or a steam bath?

Alicia: Yeah it’s a huge difference actually. There has been data reported that shows when you go into an infrared sauna you’re sweating 80% water, so your sweat analysis will be 80% water and about 20% toxins. In a traditional sauna it’s about 97% water and 3% toxins. So the difference is, in a traditional sauna you’re getting hot air, so you go in, and you’re sweating because you’re in a hot environment so your body is just cooling itself down, so it’s a surface level sweat. In infrared, it’s warming you from the inside out, so it’s creating a state of hyperthermia, so you’re going to sweat from a deeper level, so more toxins are going to come out.

Dr Hyman: So the toxins are stored in your fat?

Alicia: Yes.

Dr Hyman: So it’s hard to get them out.

Alicia: It is.

Dr Hyman: Heavy metals you can chelate, you can do other things but all the petrochemical toxins, pesticides, plastics, PCP’s, all that stuff we’re exposed too, really hard to get out of our system right?

Alicia: Yes they don’t come out when you’re going to the bathroom, they really come out during sweat and most people don’t sweat deep enough to get them out.

Dr Hyman: And they’ve actually analyzed the sweat that comes off of people and measured the toxins levels that are in there.

Alicia: Yes.

Dr Hyman: So what kind of stuff are you finding?

Alicia: So we’re finding a lot of cadmium, aluminum, lead, as well as now with the opioid crisis, a lot of drugs, it’s a great way to detox from that as well.

Dr Hyman: Yeah, is this what they used after 9/11 with the firefighters and the workers because they all got so sick from all the toxins from the buildings that were all destroyed and then they put them in these saunas and they were doing them for hours, right?

Alicia: Yes absolutely. In fact one of our biggest markets right now is fire stations, and what we’re finding is fire fighters have the highest rate of cancer in the United States. The reason is that there’s so many synthetic fabrics, so when they’re burning they’re burning hotter and those chemicals are going into the firefighter’s system, there’s no way to get them out.

Alicia: So the interesting thing that we’re seeing is when firefighters come back from a fire, normally they just do what’s called a gross decontamination shower, so they shower for 20 minutes and it’s really intense.

Dr Hyman: They hose them off.

Alicia: Hose them off, get it off. Our protocol is shower, sauna, shower. So they do their gross decontamination, then they get into a Sunlighten, after 20 minutes they wipe their skin and it’s actually their sweat is like a grayish brown from all the chemicals coming out.

Dr Hyman: Wow frightening yeah. So the intensity of the heat isn’t like a regular sauna, right?

Alicia: Correct

Dr Hyman: … it’s much easier to tolerate.

Alicia: It is, it is. So a traditional sauna is usually around 180 degrees and higher, and infrared, the ideal is between 110 to 135, that’s where you’re going to get the optimal benefits. The other thing with infrared that’s really important, there’s a lot of infrared right now on the market because it’s a big craze.

Dr Hyman: Yeah. So many companies how do you know which one? Everyone says they’re better than the other one.

Alicia: Right. Absolutely, you really want to look for the right quantity and quality of infrared.

Dr Hyman: We have different spectrums of infrared in us right?

Alicia: We do, we do, but the big difference is that we deliver the most of infrared at the optimal wavelength to the body that’s going to bring about wellbeing. So we deliver between 95 and 99% infrared.

Dr Hyman: Yeah so there’s a lot of other benefits beside detoxification, right?

Alicia: Yeah.

Dr Hyman: So what kind of benefits would you see besides that?

Alicia: Really, there are so many, like muscle recovery. We have a lot of professional athletes who use our saunas to help with their performance. It’s great for anti-aging because of the increased circulation, that it helps carry oxygen through your body so you get a really nice glow. It’s really good for relaxation, so anybody who has a lot of anxiety in their job or in their life, to go into the sauna and feel that cozy warmth, it’s wonderful for that.

Dr Hyman: Yeah I read a study once where they looked at heart rate variability which is basically when your heart is not beating in a highly variable way it means your body’s really stressed. So the most dangerous heart beat is a flatline, that’s the least variable. You don’t want that. You want, let’s say 70 beats, 68, 69, 71, 72, if it’s 70, 70, 70, 70 that’s bad, that’s a sign that you’re nervous system is not working. And in this one study they found that people had heart failure, literally went in these saunas and their heart got better, their rhythm got better, overall cardiovascular fitness got better. And also it created this alternative to the stress response called the parasympathetic response, what calms your nervous system. So whenever I’m stressed, or whenever I’m like have a lot going on, if I go in a sauna I always come out feeling completely different and completely relaxed, and it’s not just in your head, there’s actually a physiologic response that happens. And the best part is if you go to a cold bath after, cold shower, it’s even better.

Alicia: I’ll skip that part. But we actually have clinical data done on our saunas showing that it helps lower blood pressure. So to back up what you’re saying it’s wonderful for health benefits.

Dr Hyman: That’s amazing, and you have these three in one wellness programs, what is that?

Alicia: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So Sunlighten is the only company that delivers all three of the infrared wavelengths. So every infrared sauna that’s on the market is a far infrared, so we have the only full infrared spectrum infrared. We’ve patented and mastered a way to deliver the far, mid and near infrared, and then we mix those wavelengths for different health benefits. So there’s six programs in the sauna, so similar, you know you get on a treadmill and you can do a hill, or you can walk, or you can run. In our sauna we have a cardiovascular program, we have an anti-aging which is really good with near infrared, we have a relaxation, we have a detox, we have a weight loss and a pain relief.

Dr Hyman: Amazing.

Alicia: So depending on what you want, each time you go in you’ll have a completely different experience because they feel very different from each other.

Dr Hyman: That’s great. You also have these other cool things in there besides the sauna, you have the light which is Chromotherapy. I want you to explain that, and you have this acoustic thing going on there, speakers and you have this whole vibration, sound therapy thing going on. What’s that about?

Alicia: So we really believe that infrared is meant to be enjoyed and we want to create a whole experience. So first of all with lighting, when you can go in, you can see how they’re changing colors now but you can leave them at a certain color, and it just helps kind of calm your mood if you want to rev up for the day to use the red, it’s the psychology of the colors on your mind. We also have like you said, it’s called ART, it’s acoustic resonance therapy. So it’s an all over, kind of a musical massage. So there’s-

Dr Hyman: So the whole thing vibrates.

Alicia: Almost, almost. So the music is played at a so sound frequency and then there’s speakers under the bench so you actually feel the music.

Dr Hyman: That’s great.

Alicia: So between the really cozy infrared, the colored lights and then feeling the soothing music it’s a total body experience.

Dr Hyman: That’s awesome. So one question I get a lot is, and this is not knowing really about how these are manufactured, is that when they construct these things they’re using glues and they’re using different materials that can actually off-gas and be toxic. How do you sort of answer that?

Alicia: Yeah we get that question a lot because there’s a lot of different qualities of infrared saunas on the market. So Sunlighten in very precise with the products that we use, and source all of our raw materials. So this for example, this wood is a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free basswood, it comes from Wisconsin. We don’t use any veneers, we don’t use any paints or anything like that. So you’re not going to have any off-gassing with our products. Also, low EMF’s and-

Dr Hyman: Yeah you’re in this thing, hear about EMF’s and you-

Alicia: Yes all of our products are low or ultra low. So we’re the only sauna company that controls our manufacturing process from start to finish. Our global headquarters are in Kansas City, we send all raw materials to a private factory in Vietnam where the saunas are assembled. We have really high standards as to what kind of products and materials we use so we don’t use a standard sauna factory where most saunas are mass produced.

Dr Hyman: That’s pretty awesome, so I would just say I recommend sauna therapy as a core treatment for so many of my patients who have stress, who have chronic disease, who have heart issues, diabetes. It actually increases fitness, it’s been shown to increase weight loss and certainly for people who are detoxifying. So I just think this is one of those ancient therapies, whether it’s sweat lodges in the American’s or the Finnish saunas, of course they do jump in the cold water, and I would just check it out because it’s one of those fundamental self care tools that I recommend to my patients and I use myself. So thank you so much for joining us today.

We appreciated the one-on-one time with Dr. Hyman and learned so much at the summit. The Sunlighten team is eagerly anticipating the 2nd Annual Feel Good Summit!
