How can infrared saunas be so effective at lower temperatures than traditional saunas? Without a little scientific background, it doesn’t seem to make much sense at first blush. But it’s true and it’s all about the fact that infrared light waves heat the body and NOT the ambient air around the body.
Infrared light (experienced as heat) is the invisible part of the sun’s spectrum with the ability to penetrate human tissue. Infrared sauna therapy uses this penetrating characteristic to heat the body directly at the core rather than simply warming the air or skin’s surface.
The Sunlighten infrared sauna experience is similar to lying in the sunshine (without the dangerous ultraviolet or UV rays) and feeling the heat radiate to the core of your body. Remember the last time you were sunbathing with sunscreen? Were you still hot? Absolutely because the sunscreen only stops the UV light from hitting your skin. The infrared heat (from the sun or in the sauna) penetrates your skin, giving you that wonderful natural warmth. You don’t need steam or hot rocks for that penetrating heat and resulting sweat.
Infrared heat is very gentle. It is effective at operating temps of 100°-150°F (ambient air temperature measurement). Unlike traditional (hot rock or steam) saunas – which operate at well in excess of 200°F – infrared heat has the benefit of being effective at a more comfortable operating temperature.
Traditional saunas heat the air. Infrared waves heat the body directly without causing ambient air temperature to rise to stifling levels. Rather than inducing detoxification and relaxation, the high temps in a traditional sauna can make the experience unbearably hot and difficult to breathe.
Sunlighten infrared saunas have been clinically shown to increase the body’s core temperature, resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, which is where the majority of toxins reside. Because infrared heat penetrates human tissue rather than simply heating the surface of the skin, infrared saunas are seven times more effective than traditional saunas at creating a deep sweat that detoxifies the body. By raising the body’s core temperature, infrared saunas can produce a sweat composed of 20% toxins vs. only 3% toxins with a traditional sauna.
