Men’s Health Month Series: 3 – Sam’s 5 Pillars of Wellness

Life Stories

One of the reasons I love working at Sunlighten is because the culture here completely embodies my stance on health and wellness. Wellness can mean different things to different people. For me, it is about optimizing my performance both physically and mentally. The best way I can do that is to practice five lifestyle techniques that have proved to help me think and feel my best.

My 5 Pillars of Wellness
Clean Nutrition

I begin each day with lemon water to jumpstart my body and organs, followed by black coffee for an energy boost. Throughout the day, I eat very clean and strive to have a low-carb, low-sugar vegetable such as kale or cauliflower, with every meal. My favorite is brussel sprouts! I sauté them with avocado oil and they are delish. I also drink at least one gallon of water and avoid all gluten, dairy and alcohol.

Physical Exercise

To prepare for a good workout, I take a B vitamin and some arginine for the muscle pump. My workouts consist of 60-90 minutes of weight training. I target every muscle group at least twice per week with proper recovery time in between, never working the same muscle group two days in a row.

Mental Exercise
Overlooking fields

The mind is such an important part of wellness that is often overlooked. Every morning, I like to get my mind right by meditating or listening to an inspirational podcast such as Gary Vaynerchuk or David Goggins. Throughout the day I practice breathing exercises to relieve stress and anxiety. To keep my mind sharp, I read books regularly. And to stay humble, I keep a gratitude journal to remind myself of everything that I am grateful for.

Sunlighten Infrared Therapy

I use my Solo® System far infrared sauna three to four times a week. After a 30-minute session, I’m dripping in sweat. It helps me bounce back much quicker from my workouts and gives me that skin glow I want. When I hit the pillow at night after using, I will be asleep in 30 seconds.

A Good Night’s Sleep

I make it a critical task to go to bed at a time that allows me to get seven to eight hours of sleep. My day from start to finish is typically 14-15 hours and it is critical to get enough sleep to allow my body and mind to recover. A quick sleep hack I love is taking Broken Cell Chlorella before bed. It helps with detoxification, recovery, and getting to that deep sleep state.

The key to this is? Wash, rinse and repeat! Consistency is key and this is a typical standard day in my life.
