Red Light Saunas
RED LIGHT SAUNAS

There’s more to a red light sauna than red light

What matters in a red light sauna

If you’re looking for red light therapy in a sauna, what matters isn’t just whether the light is there. It’s the wavelengths, how the light reaches your body, how much you receive—and how it all works within the sauna experience.

Wavelength

Red works near the surface. Near infrared reaches deeper.

Proximity & coverage

Light weakens as it travels. Placement matters.

Dose

The right amount of light, not the most.

Heat

Inside a sauna, your body gets light and heat.

Start with the light

Red light gets the attention because you can see it. But photobiomodulation is a bigger story.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is light influencing biology

Red and near infrared are complementary wavelengths used in PBM. Red light works closer to the surface, while invisible near infrared reaches deeper.

How light is delivered

Seeing red light tells you it’s there. It doesn’t tell you how much reaches your body.

Light weakens as it travels. That makes proximity, placement and whole-body coverage important parts of PBM delivery.

Sunlighten designs red + near infrared light into the sauna walls, bringing it close to and around your body.

THE RIGHT AMOUNT

More isn't better

With PBM, your body’s response to light follows a biphasic curve. Too little may not create the desired response. But once you reach an effective range, simply adding more doesn’t necessarily create more benefit. The goal isn’t the most light. It’s the right amount of light reaching your body.

A red light sauna is still a sauna

LIGHT + HEAT

PBM devices are often evaluated by looking at light alone. But inside a sauna, your body is experiencing light and heat.

We didn't start studying light when red light became popular

For more than 25 years, we’ve been learning how infrared light can be delivered through a sauna to support the body. In 2010, mPulse became the first far infrared sauna to integrate near infrared light—years before today’s red light trend. That experience shapes how we think about red light saunas today.

Why we build around the science of light. Connie explains why Sunlighten considers wavelength, dose, proximity, placement, whole-body coverage and the thermal environment when designing a red light sauna.

We don’t just ask what light we can put in a sauna. We ask what light reaches your body.
